Google is extending Gemini in Google Classroom to K–12 students, bringing its study tools into the same environment where students already receive assignments and class materials.
From 10 August, students of all ages can access the Gemini tab in Classroom where their school administrator has enabled the service. Students can use course materials to create practice quizzes or flashcards, while contextual starter prompts can use a specific class, assignment instructions and curriculum materials to tailor the support they receive. Mobile rollout began on 17 August.
Why this matters
For schools already using Google Classroom, the update gives students a more structured way to use generative AI around actual course content rather than starting with a blank public chatbot. It also puts access in the hands of administrators, who can control Gemini in Classroom by group or organisational unit.
That control does not remove the need for clear expectations. Google advises users to review AI-generated content because outputs can be wrong, so schools will still need guidance on when Gemini is appropriate and how students should check what it produces.
