Learn a wide range of sketching techniques used to communicate and present design ideas effectively, with a particular focus on approaches that students can apply to coursework and design portfolios.

The course begins with simple linework and the basic principles of effective sketching before progressing to more advanced techniques, including line weights, digital marker rendering, integrating materials and images, and a variety of digital rendering methods. While websites and social media can provide useful inspiration, seeing these techniques demonstrated and applied in person can make a significant difference in learning how to sketch and communicate design ideas effectively.

This one-day course will cover a range of 2D and 3D digital sketching techniques designed to help you develop confidence in teaching these skills and presenting design intent clearly. The first part of the day will focus on 2D digital sketching techniques and the small details that can make a significant difference to the quality of a sketch. Later sessions will build on this work, exploring a broader range of techniques for enhancing sketching and rendering.

There will also be demonstrations of how AI can be incorporated into the design workflow while retaining original creativity and clear evidence of the design process.

All equipment and resources will be provided on the day. However, if you have your own iPad, you are encouraged to bring it, as a number of files and resources will be shared during the course.
