Social media is rewiring an entire generation, with research suggesting it affects everything from mental health to attention spans and behaviour.
It’s unsurprising, given the highly addictive nature of these platforms — curated by algorithms lacking ethical judgement that have been designed to maximise engagement, no matter the cost.
Parents have their hands tied. They don’t want their kids to miss out or feel excluded, and yet they know this is not what childhood should look like.
MediaMaps is part of a global network using education to empower students to understand how social media works, so that they can make informed choices about whether to hand over their time and attention to companies putting profits before people.
Led by award-winning journalist Hannah Ritchie, MediaMaps offers interactive evidence-based talks which follow a spiral curriculum model and are suitable for Years 7-12, with content tailored for each age group.
MediaMaps also offer social media literacy sessions for teachers and parents, ensuring all key stakeholders within a school community can work together to foster healthier digital habits and greater transparency around the content young people may be exposed to online.
