What is Forest School?
Forest School is an inspirational, child-centred approach to learning that builds confidence and self-esteem through regular hands-on experiences in natural environments. It can be implemented in both urban and rural settings.
About Forest School Learning Initiative (FSLI)
Founded by Christina Dee, a pioneer in the Forest School movement since 2000, FSLI has trained over 3,000 Forest School Leaders across the UK, Australia, Malaysia, and China.
- Recognised by the Forest School Association
- Over 95% of trainees complete the course within a year
- Trainers are active Forest School practitioners working with 500+ children weekly across 13 settings
- Fully insured, with First Aid and DBS-cleared staff
Course Overview – Level 3 (ITC First Accredited)
This training equips participants with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to set up, lead, and run Forest School sessions in their own settings. The course supports alignment with both the Early Years Learning Framework and National Curriculum.
Structure:
- Online Module (~20 hours, self-paced)
Introduction to Forest School principles and theory
Assignments submitted and marked by FSLI tutors
Ongoing tutor support available - Four Face-to-Face Training Days
Hands-on skill development including:
Risk-benefit analysis, health and safety procedures
Planning, running, and evaluating sessions
Building your Forest School Handbook
Observing and analysing children’s learning
Tool use, knot tying, shelter building
Fire lighting and safe outdoor cooking
Environmental impact and site sustainability
